EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
